Happy Friday (not the 13th)

Just a link today, because I'm in a rush, but I absolutely love this site and need to stop forgetting to visit it.

La Blogotheque.

The videos are always such a joy to watch. Surprising and charming and transporting.

I love love the Andrew Bird video, as well as the Arcade Fire in an elevator!
That said, almost every video becomes an instant favorite as soon as I see it.

Crying Over Spilt Milk Glass

My mother has collected pink depression glass for as long as I can remember, and perhaps that is where my love of glasswear originated. Recently, a glass bowl she gave me was broken (very sad), but it got me thinking about Depression Glass,
Milk Glass
and Satin Glass

It is just so bright, cheerfully colorful and pretty, which, frankly, the world could use more of. Especially lately.

A Different Shade of...Shade

In anticipation of Spring (which isn't until March 20, but I am definitely ready), I've been thinking of a childhood obsession of mine that sprung from too much Jane Austen and an Oregon-cultivated need for sun protection: the Parasol.
While I am looking forward to many lovely sunny days gardening and reading in the yard, I'm still an indoor girl at heart, which requires protection from the elements. But why not be pale and girly in stlye, right?

The parasol is an accessory that doesn't really need much updating to remain in style, and is such a charming addition to a summer ensemble.

From the Victorians ↑ to modern day ↓

Parasols are even charming ON accessories:

I found these childrens parasols and want one for myself! ↓

Anyway, just a little love.

Feeling Fashionly

Well...yesterday's post kind of got away from me, mostly because I simply could not find the images I was looking for. Today's should be a little longer...

New York's Fashion Week is wrapping up, and from what I saw, there were some very diverse collections. Of course, everyone is talking about the throwback to the 80s and the shoulders--oh my the shoulders--going on at the Marc Jacobs show. I really liked the dark, plain colors juxtaposed with the vibrant neon featured in both MJ and Michael Kors. Although each collection featured color in different ways. At MK, color served more as electric shocks punctuating lines of classic neutrals, while at MJ colors moved through the show to a bright energetic climax that cooled out again in the end. While I wasn't a huge fan of the entire collection, oh how much do I want this Marc Jacobs dress? ↓

This will definitely expose my nonadventurous fashion spirit (and by this I mean I tend to be old fashioned and fairly monochromatic), but I loved Erin Fetherston's colletion. I first learned of Fetherston when she designed a line for Target, and although her shapes aren't particularly innovative, I am really drawn to the feminine simplicity and playful attitude of these pieces. I can envision myself as an updated Victorian teacher, who instead of going to tea and teaching French to rich children is going out for wine and speaking French with her sophisticated friends. And I must find some of those striped tights!

All these fashion updates got me thinking about making my own clothes (it's something I really wish I knew how to do), which got me thinking about dress patterns and how I used to watch my mother sew clothes for me when I was little. Anyway, here are some dress patterns I found (running from the 1930s-1970s) that I think, with a few updates (higher hems, edgier necklines, etc.) would be really fun to try out:

Also, am I nuts for loving these? ↓
I think that with the right fabric, they could be really amazing. and not in a (shudder) Gauchos kind of way blech.

Also, for kicks, I'm adding these fun patterns because I want them!

Colorfully Oraginzed

Going to be a short post today...whew! I'm busy after the holiday weekend. Although it was a holiday, and I have a nice new big yard to enjoy, it was very stormy and rainy, so I mostly stayed inside and organized the new place. All that organizing reminded me how in need of containers I am, and all that grey got me in the mood for some color. I immediately thought of vintage tins, and am on the lookout for some bright additions such as these.

@ ATLITW.

Listening to Coconut Records, and how nice it is! I hope he's coming through town soon. I saw him once in an elevator (riding, not playing). He's quite short (like this post). ♥

Happy Friday the 13th.

I thought today would be an appropriate day to post about one of my absolute favorite illustrators, Edward Gorey. I have been a long time lover of his work.

I recently acquired a copy of this book, and it is fantastically odd. ↓

This is a page from Gorey's "The Listing Attic," and I'm already on the lookout for my own copy ↓

There is nothing creepier than a group of pale children ↓

And finally-- Not only am I a huge fan of the show, but Gorey's opening of PBS's Mystery! is just the greatest thing ever.

Have a Happy Friday 13th!

Posters!

I thought I was going to get more range with this post, with local or independent poster designers and printers, but I fell into band posters and have barely found my way out. They are too much fun to look at. Here is a (small) list of my favorites so far:

↑ It's all in the name of this design company (Delicious Design League.) They have really wonderful posters. I love this one for the colors and movement (and that it features my favorite animal).
Some more from Delicious Design:

↑ Dislike the band, love the poster.

I also like that their site displays the full poster and then details on the side.

Too many to love!

moving on...

Methane Studios has some nice posters (if a sort of unfortunate name?). I really like this one.

↑ I love the colors in this poster by Gianni Rossi, and that Bjork's face lends itself so well to caricature.

I know I posted about him yesterday, but I just love this guy's posters, so here is more Garrett Karol:

↑ I particularly like this one. Reminds me of a poster from yesterday.

And, finally, my favorite from today:

Francesca Montanari. Her work is lovely and fun.

Listening to the new Laura Gibson Album. wow.
