Well, Mr. G., I Salute You

Today K started teaching his first university classes, and from what he told me, it went really well. I'm super proud of him! This picture makes me laugh because I took it of him while we were wandering around his campus a few weekends ago, but it reminds me so much of those "first day of school" photos of children standing in front of their kindergarten classrooms. He just needs a little backpack and a name tag.

So, K, in honor of your awesomeocity, I salute you.

His campus is pretty:

Picture-A-Day: This morning was bright yet foggy, which made for a beautifully eerie aura. Perfect time to take a photo of the LDS temple next door because it is itself eerie and beautiful.

Music, Mod Furniture and Vintage Dresses..it's going to be a good weekend.

I have a busy weekend ahead of me. I'm going to a music festival tonight and tomorrow night, which I'm excited for and then on Sunday my favorite vintage store is having a garage sale, and there is another huge sale of mid-century furniture that I really want to make it to. So, hopefully by Monday my head will be full of good music, my closet full of new dresses and my house full of mod nic nacs (unfortunately my tiny house wont fit any more furniture!).

Have a fabulous weekend!!

Picture-A-Day On my way into my office, this morning. (It was already 85 degrees outside!)

Listening to live in a matter of hours:
Chromeo
Band of Horses
Devendra Banhart
Matt and Kim
Girl Talk
...and more. I'm pretty excited. I'm going on my own tonight, which should be interesting, as I've never done that before and large crowds of people tend to make me anxious. I'm wondering how I'll do with no one to counter balance my anxiety. I'm sure I'll be fine. It will be nice to go wherever/whenever I please. Wish me luck!

When Things Pile Up

I read this poem today, and maybe it's just how I've been feeling lately, but I could relate.

All She Wrote
by Harryette Mullen

Forgive me, I’m no good at this. I can’t write back. I never read your letter.
I can’t say I got your note. I haven’t had the strength to open the envelope.
The mail stacks up by the door. Your hand’s illegible. Your postcards were
defaced. Wash your wet hair? Any document you meant to send has yet to
reach me. The untied parcel service never delivered. I regret to say I’m
unable to reply to your unexpressed desires. I didn’t get the book you sent.
By the way, my computer was stolen. Now I’m unable to process words.
I suffer from aphasia. I’ve just returned from Kenya and Korea. Didn’t you
get a card from me yet? What can I tell you? I forgot what I was going to
say. I still can’t find a pen that works and then I broke my pencil. You know
how scarce paper is these days. I admit I haven’t been recycling. I never
have time to read the Times. I’m out of shopping bags to put the old news
in. I didn’t get to the market. I meant to clip the coupons. I haven’t read
the mail yet. I can’t get out the door to work, so I called in sick. I went to
bed with writer’s cramp. If I couldn’t get back to writing, I thought I’d catch
up on my reading. Then Oprah came on with a fabulous author plugging
her best selling book.

When Things Come Back to You

Good news!
If you look back at this post, and the end of this one, you'll be happy to read that the saga of Lily's childhood matryoshka collection has a happy ending. The package containing them wasn't stolen from my doorstep, it was sent back to my mother, who has sent it back to me. I opened the package today, and I'm really happy to be reunited.
This one was my first, and remains my favorite.
She's also going to serve as my Picture-A-Day, taken this afternoon in my office.

Trendiness or Nerdiness?

Don't get me wrong, I love my glasses, but lately I have been itching to try some new frames. The dilemma here is that I know in a few weeks (or outfits), I'll want to switch it up again, and should I bother to get prescription lenses for vintage frames, or just go the plain glass route and end up squinting through my trendy vintage horn rims? Alas, I'll probably stick to the ones I've got, but perhaps will get them resized so they will stop slipping of my face and falling on the floor. (Wow, what a nerd I truly am).

Happy Weekend!

Picture-A-Day
In my car this morning. The feather that hangs from my rear view mirror.

I realize now I started this project at an odd time. Not quite the end of the month and not quite the end of the week. But, hey, you have to strike when the mood hits you I suppose.

Have a fantastic weekend!

When Routine Becomes Rut.

So I realize I have, ahem, complained a lot lately about being quite busy, and although not much has changed, I have thought up a good way for me to get a little perspective and feel as though there is at least a tiny amount of creative activity happening.

While in London, I got so used to having my camera with me every day and tapping into that part of myself that is really curious about the world, attentive to detail and that loves loves loves finding beauty in things. So I have decided that although I'm feeling this drain of energy (the inevitable come-down after bursting with new sights/sounds/places/people/tastes/smells/weather/minute-by-minute sensations during my trip), I need to find a way to make the routine of daily responsible life feel a little bit out of the ordinary....

SO I've decided that for the next month I am going to take a photo a day during the time between when I wake up for work and when I return home to my front door. I just feel that I normally wake up, blearily stumble through the process of getting ready, drive half-listening to the radio half-stressing over (and I hate to admit, yelling at) other drivers, and then stumble up to work without seeing any of the world around me. And I get too focused during the day and forget to leave my desk. All in all, it's no way to live. That's why I'm doing this. To wake up my senses a little and to knock that soul-sucking routine for a loop. We'll see how successful this endeavor is.

Wish me luck.
Today's contribution:

Afternoon snack. I always get hungry about an hour before I leave work and usually have to snack, or the drive home can make me a tad cranky. Today was French bread with light Belgian butter. Would have been excellent with un cafe.

Wed. Weekend Recap

I was stressed this weekend, so K took me on a minibreak from life to look at turtles and smell the roses. I took a few photos (which ALWAYS makes me feel better.

A small weekend recap. Better late than never?

There need to be two of me.

I have only 5 minutes. Blah.
These are more pictures from London. Let's see...we were walking around Bloomsbury, taking in the sights. Stopped in Russell square, saw some flowers, squirrels, fountains and stopped for some delicious coffee.

Sorry this is so harried...I will fix it soon.

Late Monday

Slowly but surely, I'm sifting through London photos. I really don't know when I've been this busy. It is kind of insane. I am tired of not getting some photos up, however, so I'm just going to ignore the perfectionist in me screaming to wait until I have time to do the posts justice, and just do it.

This is, I think, was the first photo I took, and I was really excited, having just come off a True Blood kick at home. Then I was remarkably pleased (in my long-plane-ride-addled brain) that I caught the sign as it was showing "Cockfosters". Apparently sometimes I can be a 12-year-old boy.

This is my first sight of the street we were living on. The flat is just up the stairs in one of those buildings. It was a lovely place to stay! So close to the park.

The rest are from inside the British Museum, which we were just walking past and decided to go in. Amazing artifacts--and I got to see the Rosetta Stone (my pictures are very blurry though).
