Failing and Flying

↑
Sometimes, when life is feeling particularly difficult, I begin to wonder why I do certain things when it seems as though I will never get much in return. I can't help my mind wandering this direction in weaker moments, but I do not like to let this feeling in too often because, really, what is the alternative? To do nothing at all? A friend recently shared this poem with me, and it inspired me to keep trying at things, even when I feel like giving up, even when I don't see success anywhere on the horizon.

Failing and Flying
By Jack Gilbert

Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew.
It's the same when love comes to an end,
or the marriage fails and people say
they knew it was a mistake, that everybody
said it would never work. That she was
old enough to know better. But anything
worth doing is worth doing badly.
Like being there by that summer ocean
on the other side of the island while
love was fading out of her, the stars
burning so extravagantly those nights that
anyone could tell you they would never last.
Every morning she was asleep in my bed
like a visitation, the gentleness in her
like antelope standing in the dawn mist.
Each afternoon I watched her coming back
through the hot stony field after swimming,
the sea light behind her and the huge sky
on the other side of that. Listened to her
while we ate lunch. How can they say
the marriage failed? Like the people who
came back from Provence (when it was Provence)
and said it was pretty but the food was greasy.
I believe Icarus was not failing as he fell,
but just coming to the end of his triumph.

A Day Off

Not feeling so hot today, and I actually took the day off, which is rare. But I am getting some much needed quiet and rest, and am hoping it will refresh me for the rest of the week.

Today I wanted to focus on images that wake a creative spirit in me, and I thought immediately of Anna Wolf. Her photography is beautiful, but I love her collage and "little books". They are usually so simple, but evoke a lot of feeling. The perfect thing to pore over with a cup of tea on an autumn day.

Another good source today is the ever-magical Unicorn Diaries. Beautiful and quiet and a little strange. That's how today feels too.

Picture-A-Day: K grading papers. His house, afternoon.

Listening to the sounds from K's street: cars, kids playing, airplanes.

One Thing at a Time

↑ source

Taking a cue from these lovely photos and applying it to life, I think it's time to focus on one thing at a time, find beauty in life's little joys, and keep it simple.

Grey is the Better Way (Gray)

I had a nice long weekend, but I'm feeling a little grey today. It's not really sadness...it's just that it feels as though it might be about to rain in my head. Does that even make sense? A lot to process, not positive how I feel, making plans, moving forward, but I'm just not quite sure where it all stands yet. Hm. ↑ I'll work through it soon. Promise.

Narcissim and Past Lives

I tried to post this last Friday, but it just didn't work out, so here we go, try 2!

Sometimes (and by this I mean very rarely) I search "Lily" online, just to see what pops up. I'm not looking for myself, as I have no internet credits to my name, but it is fun to see what else out there in the world shares your name. And yes, I get a lot of links to flower-related pages. Anyhow...today I found Lily Elsie, who apart from being a famous Edwardian theater actress, is so pretty it's actually fun to look at her. I adore her hair accessories and dresses. I swear I must have lived in this era in a past life, and given my fondness for it, I must have had a pretty good time.

Picture-A-Day: Alarm clock mishap lead to shooting without aiming. Running to my car (which is not this car), morning.

Listening to Sleater-Kinney because they are what I would want my band to be...if I had a band. Love.

Goodbye, Mr. Penn

RIP, Irving Penn. Your work was spare and raw and beautiful and inspiring. I greatly admired you.

Some examples of his still life. So clear and simple and good:
