Plumule

I recently ran across an Etsy shop that I absolutely love. (Etsy is an addiction I see forming, but am trying my best to keep at bay). I love this shop because all they sell is feathers, but they do it beautifully. Granted, I have yet to order from them, but I just love the way they photograph their beautiful merchandise. It seems as though they really love their products.

I seriously can't stop looking! New feather projects in the works? I'll see what I come up with!

Say it with Jewelry

Today I was listening to Madeleine Albright talk about her use of brooches as a diplomacy tool. Different shapes and animals would indicate her moods and aims for a meeting or speech. How awesome is it to be able to send messages to your enemies through your jewelry? I mean, wearing a snake pin to Iraq after being called a serpent by Saddam Hussein is pretty ballsy, and I kind of love her for it.

This story got me thinking about brooches and pins, which I have never used as communication devices, but do love for their ability to add a little fun or color to an ensemble.

Weekend Recap

This weekend was fun in a relaxed, mellow sort of way. I got a lot of naps in, bought some graphic novels, read, took some photos, and went to a street fair (probably the most active I got during the weekend).

K found some graffiti he can believe in.

We found some shade to rest in for awhile because it was hot hot hot outside.

We finally checked out the new popsicle shop. I picked Pear Vanilla Rose, and it was heavenly. It was so nice to go to a frozen treat shop that was not yogurt (we're a little saturated down here).

Posicles aside, however, I think this helped the most to keep us cool.

The rest of the weekend is a little fuzzy, as we had a little too much fun Friday night, which somehow resulted in K making wax sculptures.

And if you would guess that this is a remarkably blurry photo of my dear friend with her head out the sunroof at a ridiculous hour in the morning, you would be right. It felt a little like high school, but it was a blast.

The September Issue

I went to see The September Issue last night, and I quite enjoyed it. I love the editorial spreads in Vogue, and it was fascinating to see behind the scenes. I wish we could have heard more from the very reticent Anna Wintour, and I would have liked to see more of the interworkings of the editorial process, but it was still a really interesting study of the way the Bible of the Fashion World comes to be. And I kind of fell in love with Grace Coddington, whose work I've admired for years. K was nice enough to accompany me, and even seemed interested (bless him) when I pulled out my September 2007 Vogue and made him look through it when we got home.
Some of my favorite images from that issue:

Okay, so I really loved the 20s shoot. I like the texture shoot a lot as well, but pictures were more difficult to find.

Anyway, I recommend this film to anyone remotely interested in magazines and/or fashion. Have a good weekend!

Ballet, Candlelight, Happy Birthday, Little Blog

And, taking from yesterdays inspiration, some ways to evoke the spirit of ballet with your style. Of course, all at the same time would be overkill, but some tulle and feathers here and there mixed with billowy, flowing fabrics suggests all the grace and beauty of dance.

Tie your hair up in pretty buns and incorporate hair accessories,

Fun costume elements when you're feeling more adventurous,

Ballet-themed jewelry,

Tulle skirts and dresses

Actual ballet dresses

Flowy scarves and shirts that suggest movement.

Also, K surprised me last night with a candlelit picnic in the park. It was really lovely, romantic and much-needed. It made me quite happy. Some really dark pictures:

One final note, I just want to wish this little blog a happy birthday. I can't believe I've been collecting thoughts and inspirations here for a whole year already.
